NewMind: Newcrest Mining tool that supported the mental health for miners across Australia and beyond
Case study – Newcrest MiningIndustry: Government
About the NewMind app

The NewMind app is a mental health and wellbeing app that was developed for Newcrest Mining Limited, a world leading Gold mining company operational from 1921 to 2023 (acquired by Newmont Corporation in 2023).

The app aimed to improve the mental health and wellbeing of miners, and all employees, from vehicle operators to underground specialists, and organisational leaders, by providing tools to help manage stress, build resilience and improve adaptability to shift work (improving on-shift alertness and post-shift sleep).

Challenge

Although mining is a rewarding and lucrative career, workers in the mining sector can be at increased risk of experiencing mental health challenges, exacerbated by requirements such as shift work and Fly In Fly Out (FIFO) employment. In Australia, 44% of mining workers report moderate to very high levels of psychological distress, which nearly doubles comparison rates in the general population (27%).

Approach

Developed by miners, for miners, the app was developed using in-depth focus-testing on-site with employees across a vast range of disciplines, and management levels, to ensure content was relevant, useful, and effective with all intended audiences.

Focus groups were held with on-site miners as a primary audience, but also included heavy vehicle operators, ground support specialists, emergency services specialists, hospitality workers, and cleaners, all the way to senior management in the corporate office.

Utility Creative worked in close collaboration with experts in mental health and sleep disorders, in addition to OH&S and safety specialists, to ensure to the app delivered high quality, scientific, evidence-based information.

The NewMind app aimed to contribute to a reduction in injuries and fatalities and prevalence of mental health issues among the mining community, including depression, anxiety and related drug and alcohol issues.

Results

NewMind was available free all employees and achieved high engagement:

  • 1,000
employees across Australia, PNG and Canada using the NewMind app
  • 74%
app engagement rate (industry average 53%)
