SpineData: Legacy Clinical Data Platform Supporting Clinical Research
Case study – SpineDataIndustry: Research
About

SpineData was a web-based platform designed to support clinical data collection, quality assurance, research, and clinical decision-making. The system captured multi-lingual patient information and provides 24/7 access for healthcare professionals and patients across mobile devices, tablets, and computers. Development began in mid-2008, and the platform was officially launched in 2011.

Challenge

The University of Southern Denmark required a robust platform capable of handling complex, multi-lingual health data across multiple departments and countries. Key challenges included enabling users to design and self-manage questionnaires with conditional logic, translating responses into numeric data in real time, and maintaining data integrity for clinical, research, and registry purposes.

Approach

From 2008 to 2011, Utility Creative collaborated with the university from initial concept through to launch. During this period, the team developed a sandbox architecture that enabled multiple surveys and screens to run from a single installation and designed a responsive interface compatible with mobile phones, tablets, and computers.

Robust quality management processes were implemented, including fortnightly meetings, task matrices, and comprehensive data integrity testing. The platform incorporated secure data storage, role-based access controls, and audit logging to ensure patient confidentiality and regulatory compliance.

Clinical trial data entry tools and baseline questionnaires were implemented for both participants and clinicians. These were supported by 24/7 maintenance to ensure data reliability and optimal platform performance.

Finally, the architecture supported longitudinal monitoring, enabling researchers and clinicians to better understand the long-term trajectories of musculoskeletal conditions and treatment outcomes.
