We recently sat down with our newest team member, Bikram Singh, to learn more about his impressive background in clinical research and his journey to joining Utility Creative (UC). From his hands-on experience in driver fatigue research to his passion for improving public health outcomes, Bikram shares what drives him as a researcher and what he looks forward to achieving in his new role. Read on for a glimpse into Bikram’s expertise and excitement about contributing to our innovative projects.
My previous experience has predominantly focused on clinical research, with Monash University and the Institute for Breathing Sleep (IBAS) - an independent medical research institute based at Austin Health. I specialised in driver-related research, with a focus on the impact of sleep and fatigue on truck driver drowsiness and distractibility. I was also involved in the development and testing of new fatigue detection technologies, contributed to multiple research projects and the publication of several articles in peer-reviewed journals.
During my time at IBAS, I worked closely with the UC team on the WorkSafe truck driver fatigue reduction project. This was a fantastic experience, which even included travelling to Bendigo in the middle of winter with UC Director David Stanley to recruit and screen truck drivers at 1am before their shift!
The role with UC was a fantastic opportunity to advance my career as a project manager, while continuing to use my research skills.
Being a researcher allows me to witness the significant impact a research project can have on improving public health and health outcomes, specifically for the most-at risk populations. I’ve seen this impact first-hand, with patients experiencing Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA), and long-haul truck drivers. For me, it’s rewarding to have the opportunity to do work the world needs.
Being on the cutting edge of research-driven digital solutions is really exciting. I’m thrilled to now be part of the UC team and can’t wait to have the opportunity to play a key part in the development of projects focused on improving human health and wellness. As a bonus, I even get to continue my work on fatigue detection technologies with truck drivers.
